Smithfield cafe, EC1

Tucked down Long Lane in EC1 is the Smithfield cafe, a venerable institution that I believe still opens 24 hours a day to feed hospital workers, commuters, and the hungry porters at Smithfield meat market just across the street. This area of London was my haunt - professional and recreational - for over a decade back in the 70s/80s. Work and play blurred, helped by the round-the-clock availability of food and drink in the environs of the market. Happy, hazy, days...
