She is watching

Humans have an uneasy relationship with their own mortality and sometimes it's difficult to figure out if religious icons are there to help lessen our fears, or actually amplify them for the purpose of controlling the voluntatis populi. Either way, few countries have more iconography per square metre than Italy, as this reflection in a scooter mirror in Vietri sul Mare illustrates nicely. Saves having to look over your shoulder to see if she is watching you....
