The relationship between the Greek state and its military was fractious for much of the 19th and 20th centuries. In particular, the 1900s saw numerous coups d'état that brought to power various combinations of colonels and generals, sometimes one coup replacing another. However, the subject of the bust in this image, located in the town of Mohos on the island of Crete, was possibly a legitimate patriot: Lt. Col. Emmanuel Giakoumakis was a member of the National Resistance who fought against the Nazis occupying Crete during World War II. His valour has earned him pride of place at the Heroes Monument in the town (although it took membership of the European Community in 1981 to quell Greece's preoccupation with military intervention in democratic government).
