Ray French

Hazy sunshine backlighting the Ross fountain in Edinburgh's Princes Street Gardens.

Would you believe this most iconic Scottish attraction in the centre of Auld Reekie is actually ...French? Made of iron, it was originally cast in Sommevoire, northern France, for the Great London Exposition of 1862, but was subsequently purchased by Scottish gunmaker Daniel Ross and donated to the city of Edinburgh in 1869. It has since had a number of restorations, the most recent finishing in 2018 at a cost of almost £2 million - rather more than the two grand Daniel paid for it back in the day.
